Import Sections from a Batch File

Importing sections allows you to set up many sections in one process. To import sections, you will first need to create a tab-delimited text file (.txt) or a comma separated (.csv) file that includes at least two key fields.

Every course in BrainHoney has a System ID, which is a unique ID assigned by BrainHoney when the course is created. You will need to determine the course ID for the course related to the sections you are importing. This ID will be included in the batch file. To determine the System ID, find the course and view the course details.

We recommend that all batch imports of sections specify an external ID for sections in the import file. The external ID property is specified by the user and should contain a unique ID for the item. Typically, the external ID corresponds to the section's ID in another system at your institution.

Note: BrainHoney does not enforce uniqueness of the external ID. You should ensure that the IDs are unique in the import file.

Add (Simple)

Creates five sections with the minimum required fields. Requires two courses with external id C1 and C2.

Click the Administration tab.


Click the Sections link. The Sections view and Find window display. Click Close to close the Find window.


Click Import Sections. The Import Sections window displays.


From the Type menu, select Sections.


Click Browse. The Open box displays. Browse and select the file and click Open.


Click Continue.


A verification screen displays an analysis of the import file. If there are errors in the import file, a description of the error for each row will display in the verification screen. You should also review the data at this point to verify accuracy.

You may either click Submit to continue with the import or click Cancel to cancel out of the import process, revise the import file, and try again. If you click Submit, any rows marked with an error will not be imported.


Once you click Submit, the Import Complete screen displays the results of the import. Green checkmarks display by the rows that are imported, and a red X displays by each row that is not imported. The number of users imported displays at the bottom of the screen. Click Done to complete the import process.
